The Olympic Games are a contest usually held in summer and winter after every 4 years for athletes from all around the world. These games are the world’s most important worldwide athletic contest. This international multi sport Olympic Games is hosted once after every 4 years. These early Games were initially a part of a holy event in honor of Zeus which is the father of the Greek gods and goddesses. The games were played in Olympia.


These Games started in the year of 776 BC, when Koroibos won a foot race contest. These games developed and continued to be held after every 4 years. Even though the early sports events were happened in Olympia, from 776 BC to 393 AD. The first modern Olympics took place in Athens, Greece, in 1896.


The Olympics bring together lots of the best athletes to participate against one another in a variety of individual and group sports. The Olympic Games started with just 42 events.


As the years pass by this event has grown and now has more approximately 302 events. Summer sports contain basketball, canoeing, fencing, field hockey, judo, rowing, soccer, swimming, volleyball, wrestling, and yachting etc. Winter events consist of skating, bobsledding, ice hockey, and the biathlon. The Olympics includes more than 10,000 participants both males and females from 202 countries.


The most challenging track and field game is the decathlon. Competitors compete in ten various running, jumping, and throwing games. The athlete attaining the highest points is the winner. The pentathlon, comprising of 5 such events, was stopped after the year 1924. It was restored in the year 1948 games as the latest pentathlon, based upon five military talents like fencing, riding and running, shooting, and swimming.


The ancient Greeks were very much spirited and believed strongly in the idea of “agon”, or “contest”. The ultimate Greek objective was to be the best among others. All features of life, particularly athletics, were moved around this thought. It was hence believed to be one of the most respected if one gets a victory at Olympia.


The truth that the only award given at Olympia was an olive wreath shows this point that the athletes competed for respect, not for material or products. Athletics were of key substance to the Greeks. Even the schooling of boys concerted on athletics and music and also on academic subjects for instance philosophy.
