A Guide to the Different Types of Golf Clubs
The main objective of the game of golf is to hit the ball with a club using the least number of strokes. Because golf clubs are the main piece of equipment that golfers use in the game, it is extremely important that they have the right types of clubs to allow them to hit the ball under all types of conditions and situations. If you are into golf but are a bit confused as to what each of the clubs are really for, here is a golf club guide that should be able to help you out.
Woods
Woods are clubs that are commonly used for making long approach shots. They typically have a large head which is slightly spherical in shape and a slightly bulging clubface as well as a flattened bottom that slides aboveground without digging as the stroke is made. Originally, the heads of woods are made with wood but modern woods are now made with hollow steel or titanium which is sometimes filled with foam.
Woods are used to make the longest shots, which can range from 200 to 300 yards. They come in a number of sizes, including 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11. The 1-wood would be the driver and is mainly used for striking the ball off of a tee. The most common among the other sizes would be the 3 and 5-woods. For players who have less strength, the 7 and the 9-woods are the most recommended.
Irons
Irons are used for making a variety of shots, which are usually shorter than those which are made with woods. They have club heads which are solid and flat with grooved faces. Their lengths typically range from 36 to 40 inches and their lofts range from 16 through 60 degrees.
Irons are classified into three groups: the long irons (1 through 4); the mid irons (5 and 6); and the short irons (7 through 9). The long and mid irons are used for making fairway or other easy ground shots while the short irons are used for making more difficult ground shots as well as for making approach shots to the green.
Wedges
Wedges are a type of iron which have a loft of over 50 degrees. Some types of wedges include: pitching wedges, which are similar to other types of irons and have a loft of about 45 to 48 degrees; lob wedges, which have very high lofts and are commonly used for playing from sand or for making approach shots; and sand wedges that have specially designed undersides which make them suitable for making shots from the rough or from bunkers.
Putters
Putter come in a wide range of head shapes. They usually have a short shaft and a very low loft. Putters are mainly used for hitting the ball on the green; however, it can also be used for playing some approach shots and for playing from bunkers.
Hybrids
This type of club is a cross between a long iron and a fairway wood and features a combination of the best characteristics of both types of clubs. They are mainly designed for accuracy and distance control.
No Golfer is complete without their own battery powered golf cart either, so if you can afford one, they’re worth buying!
